Sam Hill Mysteries
Twelve-year-old Sam Hill has just entered her very first tournament — and she is, by her own admission, not very good yet. So when she somehow wins the City Championship, nobody is more confused than she is. What actually happened: three centuries-old ghost ancestors, only she can hear, took turns speaking directly into her skull mid-match, and one of them — a rather opinionated thirteenth-century knight's daughter — took over her body entirely to finish the fight. Sam remembers every second of it. She just wasn't the one in control.
What she's actually inheriting is a legacy: an ancient evil that returns, generation after generation, wearing the face of an ordinary man — and her ancestors are the only ones who can see it for what it really is. This time, it was standing across from her in the ring.
Meanwhile, her best friend Jacob has already noticed something suspicious about her opponent — evidence, he thinks, of straightforward cheating. Sam knows better, but she's not sure how to explain "actually, I think that guy might be evil incarnate" without sounding like she's lost her mind.
Together, Sam and Jacob start pulling at the thread — and what's underneath is bigger than either of them expected. Sam will have to learn to trust a gift she never asked for, survive being coached by three overbearing, centuries-dead women who don't always translate well into the twenty-first century, keep up with her actual martial arts training while barely holding her own on the mat, and find the one object that can put this threat back where it belongs — before it finds a new host and disappears for another generation.
